DSM-5-TR Self-reflection Assignment Instructions
Overview
Throughout your career as a counselor, you will be required to assess and diagnose clients. To engage in this practice in a competent manner, you will need to have a good working knowledge of the DSM-5-TR, including the general categories and the specific disorders that are contained in each category. This DSM-5-TR Self-Reflection Assignment will introduce you to some of the diagnostic categories that you will encounter as a counselor.
Instructions
You will have three self-reflection assignments to complete, each due during a different Module: Week. Before beginning each assignment, review the relevant categories of the DSM-5-TR.
DSM-5-TR Self-Reflection: Final Assignment
Choose one disorder from one of the following three categories:
· Somatic Symptom and Related Disorders
· Dissociative Disorders
· Personality Disorders
For each Self Reflection Assignment, respond to each of the following prompts for your chosen diagnosis:
· Considering your own worldview and belief system, why do you believe people develop the diagnosis you chose to discuss?
· What potential biases or beliefs arise for you regarding clients who struggle with the diagnosis you chose to discuss?
o What will you do in the future to mitigate these biases?
· Identify at least one code from the American Counseling Association (ACA) Code of Ethics and discuss how the code is relevant to the discussion of your chosen diagnosis.
· Considering the Dispositions Descriptions from Module 1, identify at least one Disposition that you plan to cultivate to work with clients who display the diagnosis you chose.
· Considering the ASERVIC Spiritual and Religious Competencies, identify at least one competency that you plan to cultivate to work with clients who display the diagnosis you chose.
You will organize each self-reflection by using the current edition of APA headings. Start each self-reflection with the title of the assignment (DSM-5-TR Self-Reflection) and then use the following Level 1 APA headings (Worldview, Biases, ACA Code, Disposition, ASERVIC Competency).
You will include an APA title page and reference page. At a minimum, the reference page must include the DSM-5-TR, the ACA Code of Ethics, and the ASERVIC Competencies. Remember, the graduate program at Liberty uses the guidelines for “Professional” papers, not the “Student” version.
Using other sources is not necessary; however, if you use additional sources, you will need to cite and reference them.
The DSM-5-TR Self-Reflection Assignment should be 1.5 to 2 pages long, excluding the title page and reference page. Use current APA format. No abstract is required.
