International Monetary Fund/World Bank

Position Paper
Do not use AI. Any detection will be an immediate zero.

This assignment is two-fold.  First of all, you will do research on the African country you choose.. You will research whether the IMF and World Bank policies have helped or hindered your assigned country.  You will then write a position paper.  Secondly, you will create at least one info-graphic, which will be a visual representation of your position paper.

World Bank/IMF:

You need to do research on what each of these organizations are and what their purpose is.  Their websites are listed below.

World Bank website: http://www.worldbank.org/

  • Click and read the page titled:  What we do

International Monetary Fund website: https://www.imf.org/en/Home

  • Click and read the page titled:  About the IMF.  Then read the following 3 sub areas:  Factsheets; Resources; Topics.

After you’ve done the research on the two organizations, it’s now time to do the research on your assigned country.  There are good resources on each of the above websites, but you’re not limited to only those two.  Research the following to help you prepare for writing the position paper:

  • Develop supporting evidence for both sides including factual knowledge, statistical evidence and authoritative testimony
  • Identify the issues and prejudices keeping in mind your audience.  List these as appropriate and anticipate counterclaims
  • Assume familiarity with basic concepts but define unfamiliar terms/concepts or state meanings that define your point of departure
  • Refer to those who agree with your position to assist you in developing your argument
  • Familiarize yourself with those who disagree with you to prepare your defense.  Summarize their argument then refute

The Position Paper

After your research you will be writing a position paper.  Limit the paper to 3 pages using the following guidelines:

  • Consider your audience (me) and start with a topic sentence or two that attracts attention and summarizes the issue.  Inform the reader of your point of view.

Development of paper

Focus on three main points to develop.  Each topic is developed with the following:

  • A general statement of the position
  • An elaboration that references and source data
  • Past experiences and authoritative testimony
  • Conclusion restating the position

Establish flow from paragraph to paragraph

  • Keep your voice active
  • Quote sources to establish authority
  • Stay focused on your point of view
  • Focus on logical arguments
  • Don’t lapse into summary—wait for the conclusion

Conclusion

  • Summarize, then conclude your argument
  • Refer to the first paragraph/opening statements as well as main points
  • Reflect the succession and importance of your arguments
  • Logically conclude their developments

You also need to include a Works Cited and/or Works Consulted in MLA format.

The goal is to convince me of your arguments in your position paper.  You must include one infographic, which you will create based on your research.

You will turn in your position paper and infographic via Google Classroom.
